Visa to India

To obtain a visa for India, you will need to fill out a lengthy two page application online at the Travisa website. The consulate of India now outsources two different parts of the application process to Travisa.com which is an established expedite company. The consulate still reviews and approves the visa applications.

Travisa handles the customer service side when applications are submitted and also when the approved visa is picked up. Keep in mind, you do not have to pay Travisa for expediting service if you are going to be applying in person or through regular mail. You only need visa expedite service if you need your travel documents as fast as possible.

The India consulate can be pretty strict on the requirements. First of all, your application has to be filled out online and submitted electronically. Every field needs to be filled in with complete accuracy or else your application could end up being delayed or rejected.

Proof of residence

One of the trickier parts of applying is establishing proof of residence. On the application, you will see that it asks for both your permanent address and present address. If your current address is on your valid driver’s license then use that in both the permanent and present address fields.

On the other hand, if you have an old address on your driver’s license then make a copy of your current utility bills that have your name and address on them. Sometimes the India embassy delays the processing when there are different addresses listed. So if you are in that boat, definitely include utility bills in addition to a copy of your valid identification.

Your host’s contact details

List the name and contact information of the hotel you are staying at on the second page of the application where it wants a contact name. Unless you are staying with someone you know.

In that case, include their complete contact information. The India consulate will not process the visa if this field is left blank.
