The Backstory:

Aliens exist, and several have established relations with various governments on Earth.  The United States has strongest ties to a race known as the Kayloran.  Although the general public is completely unaware of these aliens, the Kayloran routinely work with Vital Force, an elite federal agency, to subvert threats brought to Earth by radical alien groups.  Because of Earth’s proximity to interstellar shipping lanes, many alien governments would like to move in and occupy the planet.

Until now, the Kayloran have maintained a distance, only providing interstellar intelligence relevant to Earth.  However, war has escalated in the galaxy and the Kayloran need to buffer their borders.  They’d like to establish open relations with Earth and bring them up to speed technologically with the rest of the galaxy.  Earth, however, remains committed to keeping the existence of aliens a secret.

The mandate for Vital Force is to hunt down and capture aliens who are on Earth illegally. The agency is run by Julia Linq, a woman who appears like any other bureaucrat on the surface.  During the course of the film, we will discover what truly motivates Linq and her plans for Earth.

 The Film:

Vital Force is a sci-fi action drama that tests the depths of human compassion amidst alien chaos.  The film is based on the Vital Force episodic series (see next page).  The film covers two time periods; the first is about 2 months before the series, and the second time period is about three years after the series.  The film stands alone, however, and the viewer need not have seen the original five episodes.

In 2012, an alien ship, called the “Viper” crashes on Earth carrying some of the most virulent alien criminals in the galaxy. Vital Force special agents Danny Adair and Jack Kane go after the survivors of the crash.  One crash survivor, Dakari, brings a deadly virus to Earth targeted specifically for human DNA.  Dakari hopes to strike a deal for sanctuary with the leaders of Earth using the virus as leverage.  One leader, however, has her own agenda for the virus.  Agent Adair stumbles onto the plan and is presumably killed during the confrontation.  The virus is released and millions of humans begin to die.

Three years later in 2015, Jack Kane is on the run from Vital Force, the virus continuing to take lives.  Special Agent Jonah Markos, Jack’s replacement at Vital Force, discovers the truth about where the virus came from and what really happened to Danny Adair.  Kane and Markos join forces to rescue Adair and discover the location of a stockpile of cure in the process.  In order to retrieve the cure, Kane, Adair, and Markos must make an alliance with the most unlikely of people and go up against the head of Vital Force herself.

The Production:

Vital Force began as a series of five short films created by J.A. Forbes.  The five episodes were shot in February of 2008 with the hope of shooting additional episodes later in the year. Upon completion of principal photography for the first five episodes, Jen felt a feature length project would be a more fitting and realistic conclusion to the series.  The script was written in just over a month and submitted for consideration as a project for the Shoreline Community College Summer Film Program.  The film was selected on the condition that the script be expanded to a true feature length.

Jen went to work writing like crazy to bring the script up to 80 pages from its original 55.  The film follows a large ensemble cast, most of whom we saw in the original five episodes.  Nearly all of the original cast will be returning for the feature.  In addition Jen has secured permission for the use of SAG (Screen Actors Guild) actors for some of the new characters thereby increasing the value of the finished product.

This film was shot with a “Red One” camera, the latest in high definition.  This camera shoots the digital equivalent of 35mm film thus making Vital Force easily marketable upon completion.

Many of the principle crew, including the sound mixer, gaffer, and visual effects supervisor, have worked extensively with Jen on previous projects.  The rest of the crew will be aspiring young professionals with loads of enthusiasm, and students eager to learn the art of filmmaking.

The original five episodes are nearing completion with a projected release date of August 20th, 2008.
